Police rearrest two men in Fairford Iran spy inquiry

Police invoke the National Security Act in the inquiry into activity near the airbase. Earlier searches recovered petrol and found no improvised explosive device. Iran denies involvement.

British counter-terrorism police have rearrested two men on suspicion of helping Iranian intelligence in the RAF Fairford investigation. Reuters reports that the 24-year-old British national and 25-year-old British-Iranian dual national were detained under the National Security Act on 20 October.

The two men had previously been released on bail, according to the Associated Press. AP reports that nobody in the case has been charged. Their return to custody is an investigative development; the allegations remain unproved.

The forensic findings leave an important limit on descriptions of the September incident. In its published chronology, Counter Terrorism Policing says examinations of the vehicles recovered petrol and found no improvised explosive devices. That record establishes what investigators recovered, while leaving their account of the intended objective unresolved.

The official chronology records seven arrests by 8 October, when all seven men were on police bail. That page predates the latest rearrests. Its account of the earlier custody position should therefore be read alongside the 20 October reports.

Police consider Iranian state involvement highly likely, Reuters reports. Iran’s ambassador has denied that the activity was coordinated in Iran. The assessment and the denial remain competing public accounts of who may have been behind the incident; neither the rearrests nor the recovered petrol establishes a foreign intelligence service’s role.

The central questions remain the suspects’ knowledge, the purpose of the activity near the airbase and the extent of any foreign direction. The available record supports reporting the investigation’s progress while those questions remain open.

No suspect has been charged. The current 20 October Counter Terrorism Policing statement was available only through full reports quoting it; the official case page retrieved in full predates the rearrests. The extent of any foreign-state involvement, the men's knowledge and the intended objective remain unresolved.
