MI5 opens an intelligence centre to assess AI threats

The new team brings expertise from across British security bodies into a centre housed inside MI5.

MI5 has launched an AI Threat Assessment Centre, Director General Ken McCallum announced on 13 October. He said the centre was established during 2026.

The team draws on expertise from the AI Security Institute, National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre, according to his speech. Its work includes all-source assessments intended to inform government decisions about emerging AI risks.

The announcement establishes the agency’s account of the centre’s creation. Its staffing, budget and operational results are not established in this report.
